How to play with friends

Meccha Chameleon is a party game — it's only fun with people. Here's the no-fluff way to get your group into a room fast.

Before you start

Everyone who wants to play needs their own copy of the game on Steam, running on a Windows PC. (No mobile version yet — see our mobile guide.) Once everyone's bought it and booted Steam, you're ready.

Step 1 — Pick a host

One person creates the room. It doesn't hugely matter who, but pick someone with a stable connection — they're effectively running the lobby. That person launches Meccha Chameleon and looks for the option to create / host a private room.

Step 2 — Share the room code

Once the room is created, the host gets a room code (a short string). Send that code to your group — group chat, Discord, whatever. This is the key everyone else uses to join.

tip →

You can also invite directly through Steam friends if everyone's added each other — sometimes faster than typing a code.

Step 3 — Everyone joins

Each friend launches the game, picks join a room, and enters the code. They should pop into your lobby within seconds. Wait for the whole group before starting — once a round kicks off, late joiners may have to wait.

Step 4 — Pick sides and play

Meccha Chameleon splits the room into Hiders and Seekers. Hiders paint themselves to blend into the stage; Seekers try to spot the fakes. The host usually starts the round once everyone's in. That's it — go hide.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Can't see the join option? Make sure the game is fully updated on Steam.
  • Code not working? Double-check typos, and confirm the host's room is still open (not started).
  • Laggy? The host's connection matters most. If it's rough, try having someone else host.
  • Phone-only friend? No native mobile yet — use Steam Link as a workaround (see our crossplay guide).

Run the whole night smoothly

Once everyone's in the room, the real fun is in the strategy — and a smooth host keeps the energy up. Grab our free printable host & hide kit for a run-of-show, party-night checklist, and a quick-reference card. Then send your hiders to the hiding spots guide and your seekers to the seeker tips guide so nobody's guessing round one.

Multiplayer FAQ

Do all my friends need to own the game? ▾

Yes — everyone joining a room needs their own copy of Meccha Chameleon on Steam. There's no free spectator or guest mode.

How do I invite friends to my room? ▾

Host a private room in-game, then share the room code (or invite directly through Steam friends). Your friends enter the code to join.

Can I play with friends who only have a phone? ▾

Not natively. As a workaround, one PC owner can stream the game via Steam Link to a phone. See our crossplay guide for details.

What's the best number of players? ▾

Party hide-and-seek shines with a fuller lobby. Check the Steam store page for the exact player cap — aim for the upper end for the most fun.
